MATT Construction Wins a Cal/OSHA SHARP Safety Award at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Beverly Hills

The Beverly Hills Waldorf Astoria and MATT Construction won a coveted SHARP Award last week, an award given by Cal/OSHA to a handful of projects each year to recognize outstanding achievements in safety and health on construction sites.

SHARP is a voluntary partnership program prescribing a number of worker safety activities to benefit health and safety in the workplace.  The award requires regular compliance and reporting to Cal/OSHA, and consistently high marks from Cal/OSHA inspectors who visit jobsites intermittently to monitor progress and compliance.

On the Waldorf Astoria project, MATT has a full-time safety manager, dedicated to the goal of zero injuries for the duration of the project, and regular oversight from the company’s Safety Director.  “We are partnering with the project owner to go above and beyond Cal/OSHA requirements, and ensure a safe and healthy environment, not only for construction personnel, but for neighbors in the surrounding community,” expressed Joe Gregorwich, MATT’s Safety Director.

The company evaluates subcontractor work plans for potential hazards, and works through contractor specific safety plans before any work takes place on the site.  Regular safety audits further reveal any potential vulnerabilities, and MATT resolves each of these in weekly subcontractor safety meetings.

“We are confident that we’re doing right thing with respect to safety, but confirmation from an outside source like Cal/OSHA is good affirmation that we are tracking toward our zero-injury goal,” says Gregorwich.
