Paul and Steve Matt honored at the 2017 AIA|LA Design Awards
AIA|LA Design Awards recognize design excellence and individuals with a history of fostering the continued value of architecture
AIA|LA honored Paul and Steve Matt with the Presidential Honoree Design Advocate Award at the 2017 AIA|LA Design Awards on October 30th at the Broad Stage. AIA Los Angeles is amongst the most competitive of any of the AIA chapters. The Design Awards celebrate prestigious winners for their lasting contributions to the city of Los Angeles. The Design Advocate, Builder Award honors individuals with a history of advocating for design excellence.
A PROVEN TRACK RECORD
This year’s recipients were chosen because they serve both individual clients and society as a whole.
“The award is bestowed by the Chapter Board of Directors to honor individuals who have a demonstrated track record of success for fostering the continued value of architecture and urbanism, and have served as strong professional advocate for the importance of design excellence,” said Douglas Tieger, President of the American Institute of Architects. Tieger also noted the crucial role MATT Construction has played in the “Los Angeles built environment community.”
A DESIGN AWARD FOR A FAMILY OF BUILDERS
Paul was a lifelong builder whose beginnings as a concrete foreman had him working on the Salk Institute with Louis Kahn, one of the most revered U.S. architects of the 20th Century. Kahn’s unique designs were structurally challenging, and Paul Matt innovated to make the architectural concrete at the Salk possible. Steve continues the family’s dedication to building, ensuring MATT Construction follows in Paul’s footsteps by taking on projects with unique design challenges.
MATT shared the stage with former collaborators Michael Maltzan Architecture, Levin & Associates, and many others. Congratulations to all those honored this year. A full list of honorees is available at AIA|LA.
