The CSULB College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) is the first new building constructed on the campus in nearly a decade. This design-build effort gives the department a permanent home.
Sustainability is a main driver of design and construction criteria and the site is the first net-zero-ready energy building on campus. The building’s power comes from PV solar panels located on the roof as well as on top of a 150-foot-long canopy covering a portion of the walkway. A radiant floor heating and cooling system was chosen as an efficient way for climate control throughout the building. The overall design allows for air to flow efficiently throughout the building so there is no need for a central air-conditioning system, saving significant power.
The three-story building contains twenty classrooms and one conference room. The building is supported by 93 pressure piles that go approximately 80 feet deep. Challenges included a high water table and a mix of existing utilities below the surface which shaped the size and design of the building.
