A seismic upgrade to three stories and the basement, which included 19 structural steel brace bays and 52 helical piers drilled into contaminated ground water. The work also entailed interior renovation to all the departments, with new fixtures and displays, coordination with 40 managers and hard due dates for department openings. The task was to complete the main structural work with a night shift, while cosmetic work continued during working hours. The Nordstrom Paseo Nuevo store needed to be open every day at 10:00 am, and work operations could not reveal construction processes. Typical obstacles posed by working in Santa Barbara included lack of laydown areas, access for structural steel to get into the building and parking for subcontractors. MATT’s team factored in these challenges efficiently to complete this project on-time and on-budget.
