This project converted a portion of the two-story mid-century modern Stuart Pharmaceutical Building into a three-story facility to house and host performances for A Noise Within Theater. It required partial demolition and renovation of the existing structure, including restoration of the original storefront system and preservation of historic masonry screen wall at the main entry, plus the addition of a third floor and a 300-seat auditorium.
To maintain the historical appearance of the building and ensure a seamless connection with the new addition, the project recreated the original façade using concrete masonry unit (CMU) block exterior with CMU veneer on the lower levels of the new construction.
Among the challenges surmounted in this project was the extreme proximity of the building to multiple, in-use apartment buildings. MATT’s team coordinated carefully to minimize any disturbance to the surrounding neighborhood.
