Historically sensitive seismic repair and upgrade to USC’s 1929 Romanesque building, the Seeley Mudd Memorial Hall of Philosophy. The vast amount of intricate detail coupled with the complexity of the building, with numerous wall openings and various elevations, posed an enormous challenge. The scope of the work was strictly limited to voluntary structural seismic upgrades and associated removals to access areas for seismic reinforcement, including partial removal and reinstallation of building systems. The team removed historic plaster finishes and murals intact and reinstalled them after completing upgrades. MATT also added concrete shear walls, strengthened and enlarged footings and upgraded the roof. The USC Mudd Hall project won the 2004 LA Conservancy Preservation Award.
